INTRODUCING LUKE BROWN-SURVIVOR
By: Sandra J. Wyatt, Survivor
One of the best things about being a part of this group of survivors is the wonderful people that you meet along the way. I want to introduce you to a new friend and survivor, Luke Brown. Read Luke's story and then read his article on Insurance.
Luke S. Brown lives in Tallahassee, Fl with his wife, son, and a multitude of pets. He practiced insurance law for almost thirty years. He counseled clients, including insurance licensees and others whose business and professional affairs intersected insurance regulation, compliance, and coverage.
He served as an attorney with the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation, later became its Unauthorized Entities Supervisor, and was engaged in private practice. Luke also consulted for and wrote on insurance topics for a worldwide provider of insurance products, and taught insurance law at the College of Business of Florida State University.
Then things changed. Odd symptoms started, including physical imbalance, inability to focus and concentrate, short-term memory changes, and a general inability to do the analytical kinds of work on which he once thrived. It turned out that Luke had a brain tumor, specifically, an acoustic neuroma and hydrocephalus.
To make a very long story short, successful surgery was done at Duke University Medical Center. The tumor was fully removed-but Luke was left deaf on one side and with lasting brain injury from the tumor and the hydrocephalus. After some recuperation, he got physical and speech therapy. As good as the therapy was, he was not the same person, could not engage in many of the same analytical activities in which he once did, and needed to “reinvent” himself.
A sense of humor, a very supportive family, and a desire to help others spurs him on. We welcome him to this community to share and to help. He is a “work in progress” and recognizes that you are too. Please take advantage of his experiences and insights.
Read Luke's articles on Insurance here. These articles will help answer so many questions for all of us...

BOARD OF DIRECTORS
ANNOUNCES
NEW PRESIDENT
HOPE With Support is pleased to announce our new President of the Board of Directors for 2010 – Judy Grim. Judy Grim is not only a survivor, but also an activist for Brain Tumor Support. Judy joined the Board of Directors in November of 2008. For the past year she has lead the support group for HOPE With Support. The Brain Tumor Survivors and families meet at the Community Foundation on the 3rd Tuesday of every month. Her warm smile and gregarious personality are a welcome addition to lead our Board of Directors.
Sandra Wyatt contacted Judy on behalf of the newly formed HOPE With Support when she was diagnosed with a Brain Tumor. They met for brunch on June 12, 2007. Judy had surgery on September 6, 2007 for a posterior fossa meningioma.
Judy says that the support and understanding she received from Sandra and the HOPE With Support organization helped make a horrendous time easier to overcome. In thanks for that support, Judy wants to do her part to raise awareness of brain tumors and help provide support for others diagnosed with brain tumors.
As the 2010 President, Judy hopes to ignite a zeal in others to help fulfill HOPE With Support's mission to help brain tumor survivors and their loved ones and to help promote public awareness and support.
The Board of Directors also wishes to extend it's gratitude to Cathy Thorsten who served as our President in 2009. Cathy’s dedication and support helped us grow and move in a positive direction during the past year. Cathy will remain on our Board as Past-President.
Tony Nichols was re-elected as Vice President of the Board of Directors. Greg Loew and Lynette Clark will continue in their current roles as Secretary and Treasurer respectively.
HOPE With Support, Inc. was organized by a group of dedicated professionals, friends, family and a brain tumor survivor to raise brain tumor awareness and provide support for people with brain tumors, both newly diagnosed and survivors, their families, and caregivers on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.
HOPE With Support, Inc. is a non-profit organization that requires strong leadership from the Board in order to successfully carry out it's work. The next several years promise to be exciting ones for HOPE With Support. The organization will continue to have a positive impact on the communities we serve.
